What is group therapy?

Know that you are not alone! Group therapy generally consists of between 5 and 15 patients, and works to improve skill sets or target a specific problem, disease, or disability. It can be supplemented by individual therapy and other services. Group therapy often gives patients a greater perspective, as well as a support system of other individuals going through similar situations.

Current groups for adults include:

  • Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT): This skill based group covers the following topics: therapy-interfering behaviors, emotional management, mindfulness, crisis survival strategies, guidelines for accepting reality, emotion regulation, and interpersonal skills training.
  • Process Groups: Process groups provide opportunities for patients to explore various problems and challenges in a safe and supportive environment. Process groups allow for patients to discuss topics that are important to them and receive feedback and encouragement from other group members and the group leader.
  • Recovery Groups

 Current groups for children/adolescents include:

  • Adolescent Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT): This skill based group covers the following topics: therapy-interfering behaviors, emotional management, mindfulness, crisis survival strategies, guidelines for accepting reality, emotion regulation, and interpersonal skills training.
  • Social Skills: This instructional group is designed to teach important social skills to children who struggle with understanding how to interact appropriately with other children. The group uses a structured learning approach, which involves didactic instruction of skills, modeling of skills by group leaders, role-playing with feedback, and assignments to practice skills outside of sessions. Parents are provided with guidelines and strategies to support the application of these skills and promote mastery in the child’s natural environment.
  • School Success: This instructional group is designed to teach various organizational, time management, and planning skills to students who struggle with these skills. Teaching of skills primarily occurs in the group format and facilitators work individually with students to apply and adapt these skills to meet their individual needs. Students are encouraged to practice skills in between sessions and parents are provided with guidelines and strategies to support the application of these skills.
